Corriere della Sera—custom typography
Leftloft and Luciano Perondi's Molotro have designed a new text typeface for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, recently redesigned and available on newsstands since November 2007. The new typeface has been named "Solferino text", in homage to the address of Corriere's central office in Milan.
Corriere della Sera is the first Italian newspaper to have included a custom designed font in its type palette. “Solferino text” is part of a broader type project containing all of the newspaper's faces, not yet in use.
The alphabet has been developed in five weights and it's optimized for the newspaper's text setting. The letters are designed to save horizontal space without looking too tight. This feature has been accomplished by expanding the counters as much as possible, using discontinuous lines. The result is a shape which preserves the overall curve smoothness and ensures consistency with the newspaper's graphic design.
